Fans Shocked: Bungie’s ‘Marathon’ Skips Sony’s State of Play — Here’s Why You Won’t See It for Months

Sony has just announced a new PlayStation State of Play event scheduled for tomorrow, promising over 35 minutes of exciting reveals and updates on PlayStation Studios games. However, one highly anticipated title fans won’t see at this event is Bungie’s Marathon, even though its original release date was set for today.

Insiders familiar with the situation have confirmed that Marathon will not be featured in tomorrow’s State of Play. There is no release date or new information to share at this time. Additionally, Bungie is not planning any immediate follow-up presentations or updates after having gone quiet on the project. The earliest we might hear more about Marathon is in November—and even that is uncertain.

This timeline aligns with Bungie’s earlier “Marathon Development Update,” where the studio promised to share progress and a new release date later in the fall. While November still falls within that window, it marks a lengthy six-month period of silence, during which the game has been undergoing several closed alpha tests under strict NDAs. Bungie likely regrets releasing an earlier, unfinished alpha that resulted in negative feedback. There are also ongoing issues behind the scenes regarding plagiarized assets found in the game and the resolution with the original artist remains unclear.

A November reveal also raises questions about whether Marathon can meet Sony’s fiscal year deadline, which ends March 31, 2026. In August, Sony CFO Lin Tao told investors that the launch is expected within this fiscal year but emphasized it is not a firm commitment. He noted that Sony is working to fix problems, and while cancellation is unlikely, they remain cautious given past difficulties experienced with other titles like Concord.

Despite the challenges, Sony has recently expressed confidence in Marathon’s future. It seems unlikely the game will be a major revenue driver at launch, so there’s no pressing need for it to release this fiscal year. But fans hoping for updates will have to wait—there will be no news tomorrow, and likely not until November at the earliest.
